In my kitchen, a recipe is a starting point—not a script.
With Indian food, I'm adjusting the whole time. More heat for one guest. More aromatics for another. And when I pair a cocktail with a complex curry, it has to balance the spice. Get that wrong, and even a perfect dish falls flat.
Reading the Room
Program Management works the exact same way.
The frameworks, the governance gates, the ceremonies—those are the recipe. They are necessary, but they are not sufficient. Projects don't fail because the recipe was wrong. They fail because we forgot to read the room.
A milestone doesn't have a bad day. A plan doesn't feel a shifting org chart. People do.
The most important skill isn't knowing the framework inside and out. It's knowing how to pair it with the people sitting in front of you:
- Is this team exhausted or energized?
- Does this stakeholder need the grand vision, or just the next three immediate steps?
That's where the real work happens.
