Governance Is the Pre-Cleared Lane: Why Rules Accelerate AI Adoption

Schellman survey shows 78% of mature AI governance organizations have agents in production versus 22% developing it. Rules speed delivery up.

Two people, same flight, same gate.

One is pre-cleared. Shoes stay on, laptop stays in the bag. Four minutes.

The other gets the full screening. Every trip.

Earlier this month, I spent a few days in Denver with technology, engineering, and quality leaders. Most of the workshop went to one question: what do we agree on before we pick a tool?

Operating model. Trusted data. Who is accountable when the AI is wrong.

Nobody left with a tool decision. Everyone left knowing the lane.

Rules vs. Speed

The numbers point the same way. Schellman surveyed 525 people who build, buy, or govern AI at companies with $100M+ in revenue:

  • Mature AI governance: 78% have agents running in production.
  • Still developing governance: 22%.

Most of us pitch governance as the line that slows delivery down. This points the other way.

Fair caveat: the survey is self-reported, so "mature" is how people described themselves. The exact gap I would hold loosely. The direction, not so much.

What have you settled before the next AI request shows up?
